In 2005, the branch decided that many other organizations in the High Desert were offering women’s career conferences and that we should address another need. At a cost of $900.00 per girl, we could not afford to send more than 8 girls to Tech Trek, but we wanted to offer STEM career options to more girls in the Victor Valley. The first Celebrating Women in Mathematics and Science was presented in April 2005. It was aimed at high school girls. The conference is now aimed at 8th grade girls and the career options they have in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. (STEM)
Our partners are San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools Alliance for Education and Victor Valley College STEM Department. Mojave Water Agency has provided financial support for lunches for the girls for many years.
The students are registered for the conference by their science or math teachers. A maximum of 300 students may attend. They choose to attend three out of ten workshops presented by successful professional women currently working in STEM fields. Workshops have included mining, aerospace, medicine, finance, hydrology, FBI, CSI, firefighting, forestry, robotics, EMT, air quality, water resources, aeronautical engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, accounting, and space exploration.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, our 16th annual Celebrating Women in Mathematics and Science conference will be presented in a virtual format in January of 2021. We hope to return to VVC in 2022.
